Survey says: Who plays MMOs in China and why they play
I’m a sucker for statistics, which is why when our friends at 17173 released the 7th Chinese Online Game Market Investigation Report (pause to catch breath … pant, pant), I just had to take a gander.
The results of the study is quite revealing, especially in light of recent developments in the Chinese online game market where homegrown titles are giving Korean, Japanese and Western titles a run for their money.
According to the report, Chinese online games grew rapidly in 2007 and were warmly welcomed by players. Compared with the domination of foreign online games in 2006, domestic ones gained the first and second places, and occupied two-thirds of rankings in terms of market share.
The report also highlighted the changing face of the MMO player. Once dominated by hormone-enraged teens and pre-pubescent boys, the market is now made up mostly of college or university geeks and jocks (56 percent). What’s more interesting is the fact that roughly three percent of respondents are already working with a third of them having masteral or doctorate degrees.
Online game players belong to well-educated and high-income families. Almost 60 percent of players are young people between 20 years old and 29 years old, 59 percent of which have associate degrees or better. Generally speaking, well-educated young people have become the major consumers of online games because of their positive acceptance of emerging things.
The report, conducted by iResearch, also found out that making friends has become the main reason why players patronize MMOs.
