Top Ten Thursdays: Excuses! Excuses!

Yes, we’ve heard ‘em all. Excuses crop up in a lot of MMO situations, especially at critical points of trading, boss fights, and even guild or clan wars. Here’s a rundown of the most commonly used excuses in Asian (and Western) MMOs:
I wasn’t ready!
This handy excuse is usually preceded by vigorous shouts of “Timeout! Timeout! Timeout!” I’m sure you hear this line streaming from the virtual mouths of characters who lose in duels and those who are assigned to heal party members in mob and boss hunts, especially when everyone gets wiped out.
What was that?!?
Ahhh, a classic. Duels and other player-versus-player action are punctuated by this excuse. This line goes well, sometimes hand-in-hand, with “I wasn’t ready.” Hey, bub, haven’t you heard of critical and one-hit kill?
I was studying your moves first
Yeah, so was the last guy who tried to fight me. Sore losers are fast running out of excuses that they turn to this one to justify their humiliating defeat. Good for first encounters, terrible for three-in-a-rows.
The screen went blank
C’mon! What are the odds of monitors suddenly going dark during a fight with the virtual neighborhood bully or the meanest and baddest boss monster? A million to one? Uttering this line again won’t save your hide—and your dignity—next time.
My PC hanged
Let me get this straight, you’re an MMO addict who takes care of a PC better than the way you treat your mother, wife or girlfriend and yet your PC hangs every time you lose a fight? Pull the other leg!
Power outage!
This excuse I can understand, especially if you’re playing MMOs in the Philippines or another country where the power situation is more than iffy. In hindsight, however, even the poorest of Internet gaming cafes have their own generator in case your friendly neighborhood power plant conks out.
I was on the phone
An MMO player who places more importance on having a telephone conversation than the game is simply … not.
Ooops!
The passionate kill-stealer’s favorite line next to professing undying lag. Ooops! is only valid, though, if 1) you really didn’t know a player was already attacking the monster you just sent back to the hole from whence it came or 2) your graphic settings are too low that other characters are invisible.
Lag!
Despite this word’s validity as an excuse, it gets old … very fast. If your connection is just too crappy, veer away from duels and stay out of parties whose members require more action than words.
The dog ate my computer
Running out of excuses? This one will blow all doubting Thomases out of the water. Ha, that’ll be the day.

My internet died!
Yeah, my World of Warcraft guild knows I’m notorious for this excuse and sadly it’s true. Sometimes I disconnect during important boss fights but rather than lagging out, I disconnect because my internet conks out for a few seconds and returns right away.

A speeding train crashed into my bedroom!
I bet that beats your “dog-ate-my-computer” bit. :P
