Move over Dance Battle Audition, here comes Hip Street

by Joel on January 3rd, 2008

Online dance game fanatics who are tired of watching chibi-looking characters strut to their favorite beats now have an alternative—Hip Street, developed by Snail Electronics of China.

This January, Hip Street will be making its debut in Thailand, courtesy of game publisher True Digital Entertainment. Here’s an excerpt from the announcement released by the two online gaming giants:

True Digital Entertainment joins hands with Snail Electronics, a leading online game developer from China, to introduce Hip Street. Aimed at Thai teenagers who love listening to music and dancing, Hip Street is the latest and most exciting online dance game featuring a new look with popular song artists appearing in 3D animation format and many hit songs from various record labels. With such features, Hip Street is destined to become a great hit among gamers in a very short period of time. At present, the game is available in Singapore and Malaysia.

According to a survey conducted by True Digital Entertainment on the global online game market, China is one of the most active countries that continually develops high quality online games similar to other countries. The company was therefore interested in bringing Hip Street to Thailand.

Hip Street is fun to play and gamers will feel the thrill and excitement as if they are on a real dance floor. The game can help players relax and at the same time practice various skills such as body movements and reflexes. Since it is very easy to play and can be enjoyed by everyone, there is a strong possibility for an online community to develop. Hip Street will make its debut in Thailand at the Thailand Game Show 2008 that will be held from January 10 to 13 at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center. Closed beta testing will begin in February 2008.

    But it plays like Audition.

Yes, unfortunately. Unless someone thinks of bundling a dance pad for the PC for each online dance game that comes out, the Audition way of playing dance games seems to be the only route.

They could try the O2Jam route to keep things interesting–or at least to differentiate this game from Audition. It looks like a total ripoff.

They could, yes. But that would be a ripoff, too. Hehe. It’s unfortunate that controls and/or control keys can’t be licensed.

What’s wrong with chibi characters? >:-P

Personally, I don’t find anything wrong with chibi characters in MMORPGs. Some of my well loved avatars are chibi (R.O.S.E. Online, Fly For Fun, Ragnarok Online, etc.).

Recently, I’ve encountered a shift in the perception of most MMORPG players I know, from finding chibi cute to too cute that it’s so unrealistic. These players, however, maintain a deep appreciation for manga and anime.

Hence the line, “… who are tired of watching chibi-looking characters …”

Everything IS wrong with chibi characters. They’re not cute, and they are certainly NOT a digital representation of me. I would never want to use these things as avatars.
