Coming Soon: Chibi set to dominate China MMORPG market
After a successful first year run of Perfect World in at least two Asian countries—South Korea and the Philippines—Perfect World Co. Ltd. (also known as Beijing Perfect World Inc. and Wanmei) is doing it again, this time with Chibi, which has just entered its closed beta testing phase in China.
“CBT servers have been operating at full capacity since its noontime launch on January 8, 2008,” according to a statement released by the company.
What’s creating even more hype for the new MMORPG, aside from its stunning graphics and interesting gameplay features, is the filming of the movie “Red Cliff,” which is “closely related to the game.” Rumors that the movie is being directed by John Woo are doing the rounds. Gosh.
Despite being called “Chibi,” there’s nothing chibi-ish about the characters in this game, which is based completely on the Legend of Three Kingdoms.
“I am very happy that Chibi is attracting so much attention,” said Michael Chi, chairman and chief executive officer of Perfect World. “The Three Kingdom Period has always been one of the most widely covered historical periods throughout the 5,000-year history of China, and the response to our game that is based on this period has been overwhelming.”
Chi promised that the company would modify the content of Chibi according to the feedback they get during the closed beta testing period.
“We hope to launch the open beta testing of the game soon so that players across China can also fully enjoy the enchanting online experience that we have created based on the Three Kingdoms Period,” Chi said.
Whew! Looks like another year of sleepless nights for me and countless other MMORPG players in Asia.
