My World: A second look at RF Online

If this is the second look at the MMORPG Rising Force Online, where’s my first look at this Korean gaming masterpiece?

Rising Force Online, or simply RF Online, was launched in the Philippines about two years ago by Level Up! Games, the online game publisher that brought the highly acclaimed Ragnarok Online to the shores of this small archipelago.

Back then, I was searching for a new online game to play after several failed expeditions in the world of Rune Midgard and the topsy turvy solar system of R.O.S.E. Online, or Rush On Seven Episodes.

RF Online fitted the bill. So into the void I went with my gamer babe wife and explored a strange new world where magic and technology collided.

How wrong I was. What seemed a perfect fit at first fast became a chore. The game, like its contemporaries at that time, was pay-to-play. It was also a grinding game, much like every MMORPG coming out of Korea during that era when Ragnarok Online still dominated the hearts of gamers.

Now, two years after facing that harrowing ordeal, I find myself exploring Novus once again. Why, you might ask? The answer is quite simple: The law of diminishing returns.

I’m getting tired of Perfect World, though not in the normal sense of the word. I’m just out for a simple distraction from the daily trashtalking and mudslinging, not that RF Online is devoid of these problems.

I guess what they say about familiarity rings true for me, that it breeds contempt. I’m starting to get too familiar with the characters in my chosen game that I tend to look too much at the negatives to even begin appreciating the positives.

Here’s hoping that my second foray into RF Online’s Planet Novus is a fruitful—and enjoyable—one.

Now, if I can only figure out a way to kill these big bozos with my trusty peashooter.
