It’s a ripoff, but I’m not complaining

by Joel on January 27th, 2008

It’s official. I’ve decided to play Drift City regularly. For those still in the dark about this game, there are a few things you should know: 1) it’s Korean-developed, 2) it’s available in the United States, and 3) it’s a massively multiplayer online game combining the features of your favorite RPG and a racing game.

Why am I calling it a ripoff? For starters, Drift City, known as Skid Rush in its motherland, plays a hell of a lot like Need For Speed, especially Carbon. Yes, the graphics may be different, since Drift City is on the cartoony side, but it’s essentially similar, right down to the GPS (Global Positioning System), which gives players the ability to navigate through the streets in search of mission objectives.

At first, I must admit, I was a bit disappointed. I was hoping for a lot more action than just driving around town completing missions. I mean, wouldn’t it have been nice if the developers added an extra feature where you could go on a mission not just on burning rubber but also on your cool loafers?

Ah, well, that’s water under the bridge since I’m already hooked. Check out these cool screenshots of the game with, as usual, Malystryx as the star:

A brief background on the game:

Drift City takes place in the near future, during a worldwide oil shortage. A mysterious material dubbed Mittron is discovered on an island in the North Pacific. The island is later named after the material, and the Organization for Mittron Development is set up to manage the island and its resources.

This resource quickly becomes the preferred fuel for all methods of transportation as Mittron-fueled cars run much longer, cleaner, and faster than traditional gas-powered cars.

Unmanned vehicles, dubbed HUVs for High-Tech Unmanned Vehicles, then begin appearing around the island, terrorizing people. As a result of this new threat, the OMD starts recruiting professional drivers to assist in destroying the HUVs and uncover the mystery behind their sudden appearance.

Yeah, the background story isn’t exactly the stuff of video game legends, but I’m not complaining. I’m just on board to enjoy the ride.

For those who’s never played Carbon (myself included), what is the gameplay like? Are your opponents smart?

Frankly, I find the idea very fascinating. A NFS game/MMOG? It makes my mind’s gears turn.

Egad! You haven’t played Carbon? Any of the Need For Speed games? My God, man, where have you been these past three years?

Seriously, though, the NFS meets MMOG idea in Drift City is, yes, very fascinating. Whoever cooked up the idea should be brought to the plaza and shot.

More on gameplay and other juicy stuff in later posts. I’m just baiting our readers here. *wink, wink*

Haha, ok. :P I haven’t played Carbon. The only NFS game I remember playing is Porsche Unleashed or something like that.

I’m not big on driving games, since I usually play them using a controller. Ever since I started driving, I guess I find the idea of using analog sticks (or a keyboard) to burn rubber inadequate.

The only driving game I REALLY like is Burnout. I like it not because of the races. I like it because of the destruction (cue evil laugh here).
