Is it okay to turn down party requests?

by Joel on February 15th, 2008

I’m posing this question because I’ve turned down more than a dozen requests to party up or join my character’s party in grinding for experience points in my current game of choice, Perfect World.

For doing denying other players, I got some nasty comments like “kuripot,” a local term meaning “stingy,” and “swapang” and “madamot,” both of which have something to do with “greed.” For the life of me, I don’t know how turning down party requests makes on stingy or greedy.

All these comments were hurled my way on Valentine’s Day of all days. When I turned down those party requests, I promptly replied that my partymate, Cesky (played by my wife), and I were talking about something personal and that by letting others join the party, we’d be limited to PM-speak instead of party-speak.

I find nothing wrong with denying party requests, especially if 1) you dislike the player/character who wants to party up or join the party, 2) you find it disadvantageous to you and/or current party members, 3) you are talking about something not privy to the public, 4) you just want to be alone, and 5) you can’t commit to the party for one reason or another, like going AFK (awayt from keyboard) often, running out of potions at the most inopportune time, among others.

Any other views out there on why it’s okay to turn down party requests? Is it rude? Do the rest of the players in Asia feel the same way?

This is your prerogative. So the hell what if you don’t feel like inviting? What’s that line…

Hahaha! Well, I just don’t want to seem rude. I mean, in the Western World, it’s okay to turn down a lot of things, as long as you turn them down in the most polite way possible. “I’m sorry” and “rain check” come to mind.

In this part of the world, however, the culture is different. A lot of people (again, in this part of the world) take offense at the slightest hint of rejection.
