Get ready to drift
I know I’ve been remiss in my duty as a guide in the virtual worlds spawned by massively multiplayer online games developers in this part of the world. Well, today, I resolve to correct this by bringing you this starter’s guide to Drift City, a Korean-developed MMOG published in North America by NHN.
Like I said in a previous post, Drift City combines the features of a role-playing game (quests or missions, parties and guilds) with features of a racing game (cars, customization, boosters, streets and canyon roads). My first impression of this game was, “Wow! It’s just like playing Need For Speed: Carbon with hundreds—maybe even thousands—of other players.”
In the beginning…
Okay, let’s begin. First, you need to create an account. Yes, to play this MMOG, you have to register first, unlike in other games where you download and/or install first and register later.
Got your account? Good. Sign in and click the large “Play Live” button that’s smack in the middle of the Drift City North America site, which is managed by ijji.com of NHN USA Inc. Doing this will start the game download and installation (or, if you already have the game installed, launch the client).
At this point, I cannot stress enough the importance of reading and following instructions. The installation procedure is a little complicated for non-techie people.
Got through it, eh? Great! You’re now viewing the Select License screen. Click on an unused license, choose a picture, enter your desired driver name in the text field, check if it’s available, and then click the yellow button to proceed.
You’re now on your way to joining the ranks of OMD Drivers. OMD, by the way, stands for Organization of Mittron Development. What’s this? Well, you’ll find out as you progress through the game. Right now, let’s focus on getting you started.
After the choosing a license, you’ll be asked to choose your first car. Yes, they’re giving it away for free so don’t complain. Hehe. To view the cars available, click the green left and right arrows. Of course, what good is selecting a car if you can’t customize it even a little. You can also choose from four different colors for your car.
In Drift City, cars—not drivers—have attributes. These are Speed, which determines your car’s maximum speed, Acceleration, which determines how quickly your car can increase speed, Durability, or the amount of damage your car can take before needing repair, and Booster, which measures your car’s booster power.
Controls
Controls are pretty straightforward, a mix of keys from racing games and role-playing games. Need visual aid? Here’s a chart:

Well, that’s pretty much it for my first Drift City guide. I’ll let you explore the game a bit first before revealing more “secrets.”
