In defense of MMORPG publishers

by Joel on February 24th, 2008

In the past month, the world chat of Perfect World Philippines has been abuzz with complaints from players about delays in the implementation of the new patch.

These harsh reactions to the delays are understandable, yes, considering Level Up! Games, the publisher of the hit China-made MMORPG, first announced the patch in January. February’s almost over and March is just around the corner but still no patch in sight. So what gives?

Last month, I had a chat with JP Pelayo, brand manager for Perfect World Philippines of Level Up! Games, supposedly as an interview for a story on the game that would be published in GAME! Magazine’s February issue.

Since the story never saw print, I see it fit to post here JP’s response to my question about when the patch is going to be implemented.

“We are aware the delay is disappointing players which is why we are doing everything humanly possible to secure the patch as early as possible. Level Up! promised to update the game in January but the developer, Beijing Perfect World Co. Ltd., or simply Wan Mei, isn’t done with the patch yet, which includes the clan logos.

“In fairness to Wan Mei, we know they’re doing their best, even with all the hard-coding that needs to be done. An example of this hard-coding is the inclusion of the clan logos in the game. The logos, if I remember correctly, need to be coded into the game’s programming. So the patch for Perfect World Philippines is different from the patch for Perfect World Malaysia.”

So you see, there’s really no need to bash the skull in of the poor JP Pelayo. He and the rest of the PW Team are working hard to get the patch.

Players need to realize that publishers are different from developers. Going back to our example, Wan Mei is the developer, Level Up! Games is the publisher—at least in the Philippines.

Oh, and this problem with patches is universal, meaning it happens even to the best MMORPGs in the world.

Here’s a tip to those who constantly nag MMORPG publishers to come up with this and that: Just like in a long road trip, you can’t possibly make the car go any faster to reach your destination by complaining. Why not just sit back and have fun with the people who are with you. If you make it pleasant for others on this journey, you may just yet have a good time.

Happy leveling, everyone!
