To all the games I’ve played before …

by Joel on February 24th, 2008

I have this habit of revisiting some of the MMORPGs I’ve played before.

A couple of weeks ago, I reinstalled Granado Espada (after a horrendous three-day download marathon) and had a blast playing my family, The Estrangheros, again. It was short-lived, however, because my anti-virus program kept blocking or deleting X-Trap, the game’s supposedly anti-hacking program.

I’ve resolved to continue playing Granado Espada in spite of the problem. I can’t play AFK (away from keyboard), though, so it will be a long grind for my young family. I’m sure to enjoy every moment of it. Granado Espada is still, after all, one of the best Asian MMORPGs in the market today.

Roughly a month ago, I installed Rising Force Online, played it while Perfect World was running in the background, and discovered that it was still fun despite the grind.

Although I maintain characters in the world of RF Online, I choose not to take the game too seriously. By seriously, I mean playing the game the way I play my current game of choice, Perfect World. Why?

Well, for starters, I really only wanted to find out what it felt like to play RF Online again. I also have this thing for playing only MMORPGs that my wife, Joyce, fancies. Although she confesses that she’s intrigued by the gameplay of both Granado Espada and RF Online, it’s not enough to make her play the way she does Perfect World.

Even after weeks of playing RF Online I remain confused about a lot of in-game stuff. First, I can’t make my character, the Accretian warrior Deslock, move the way other player-characters move. Deslock walks and runs; they walk, run, jump, sidestep, and backtrack.

Second, I am at a loss as to the upgrade system, and there’s really no guide telling me how to do it. Sure, there are probably guides for stuff like this on the RF Online Philippines forums, but sifting through the mix of English and the local lingo makes my head ache.

RF Online remains a player favorite, however. I have yet to visit an Internet gaming cafe without a bunch of players doing their thing on RF Online. Even players who have tried making it in new game worlds like Perfect World eventually returned to the cold-as-steel embrace of RF Online.

In the next few hours, I’ll probably install Ragnarok Online and play on any of the two free-to-play servers available in the Philippines. Ahh, another escape from the pressures of Territorial Wars on Perfect World.

Oh, for those wondering what the title means, it’s from the song “To All The Girls I’ve Loved Before” by Willie Nelson and Julio Igelesias.
