Announcement Roundup: What’s in store for Asian MMORPG players in days to come
NetDragon to develop cartoon MMO with Disney
In a bid to expand its lineup of online games, NetDragon has joined hands with the Buena Vista Internet Group, a Disney company responsible for creating and operating a broad array of family, entertainment, news and sports websites, to develop a new “intelligence game featuring Disney cartoon characters in leading roles.”
The announcement, made by NetDragon chairman Liu in an interview with online game portal 17173, brings to the fore a question: If and when the new Disney MMO comes out, what will happen to existing Disney MMO ToonTown?
Here’s the gist of Mr. Liu’s interview:
“We anticipate that the predominant model for online game operations will evolve into a free-of-charge model, with users paying for value-added services. As for the types of online games we plan to develop, we are looking to attract players by boosting the amusement and excitement of our educational and intelligence games while at the same time improving the aesthetic appeal of the graphics. By improving our core game development capabilities, boosting our operating revenue and expanding our product portfolio, we believe the group will be able to continue benefiting from the huge market opportunities.
“We will strive to achieve even stronger capabilities in our core game development, for instance by cooperating with international institutions in the future. Our cooperation with BVIG is a good example. We are engaged in a content development and distribution agreement with BVIG to develop and intelligence game which we plan to officially launch in 2009.”
Three new MMORPGs for China this year

Speaking of NetDragon and its initiatives, the company also announced the launch of three new online games within the year—Heroes of Might and Magic Online, Fun Online, and Tian Yuan.
Unfortunate, of the three games, we only have information about Heroes of Might and Magic Online. We’ll strive to dig deeper into the mechanics of the two other online games that NetDragon plans to launch.
Here’s a little something about Heroes of Might and Magic Online:
Heroes of Might and Magic Online is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game by TQ Digital Entertainment. The game was slated for beta testing in December 2007.
According to the developer, the game can be played on three levels:
1. A global, randomly generated level, where players move and interact like in a typical MMORPG.
2. A strategic level, similar to a traditional Heroes III map, where players move their heroes within a certain amount of time. The heroes can travel a specific distance based on their logistics.
3. A combat level, again similar to what can be found in Heroes III..
