Private servers: A good way to test builds

by Joel on April 13th, 2008

No, this is not an endorsement for players of various online games to pack their virtual bags and move to a private server. The good thing about the trend in MMORPGs in recent years—the shift from business models from pay-to-play to free-to-play—is that it has made private servers nearly obsolete.

I say nearly obsolete because private servers still have their uses, especially for players who are on power trips since most of these servers have modified experience points and drops. These give players the ability to level up faster, get more powerful items sooner and, of course, beat the hell out of other players better.

Ahh, but that’s like filling a juvenile need. Let’s take a look at the other side of the coin, the mature yet equally insidious side. Private servers can also be used for research. Hmmm, let me cite an example.

My friend Winston James is the master of one of the most powerful clans on Perfect World Philippines’ Tiger Server. He is a passionate strategist, a testament of this is his clan’s strength and the scope of its territories. Oh, Winston has had his share of defeats. Some strategies are, of course, bound to fail.

Being a passionate strategist, he feels the urge to come up with different solutions to all tactical problems, including instance dungeons, bosses, and conquering territories. Winston says he has joined a private server to develop strategies in preparation for the new patch of Perfect World Philippines dubbed Dusk Palace.

Is it a form of cheating? Well, it depends where you’re coming from. What Winston is doing is akin to participating in a closed beta test, at least from my perspective.

I confess that I’ve joined Winston on the private server. My reason: I’ve been wanting to redistribute the stat points of my Level 9x Yao Jing (or werefox) and this is the perfect opportunity to test a new build.

Am I cheating? Hell no! I’m researching ways to better my character on a legal server. I’m not out to make a new life on a server that’s unstable and devoid of proper controls offered by game publishers who have the backing of developers.
