Perfect World: More than simple trash talk
Don’t you just hate it when you receive a private message or whisper from another player that contains nothing but trash. By trash, I mean the kind that spews forth from the mouths of uneducated people.
This is exactly what happened to my wife recently in the online game Perfect World. She was minding her own business, going around the town of Fei Wei to window shop from the dozens of player vendors cluttering the field, when suddenly a whisper or private message leaped out at her from the chat box.
Here’s what she saw:

I don’t know about you, jAmEs[PK], master of Perfect World Tiger Server’s clan TuRjACkeR, but our parents taught us better manners than those you are showing.
Report him? Nah. No offense to our friends up at Level Up! Games, the game’s local publisher, but it just takes them too damn long to act on a simple harassment complaint.
We’ll just content ourselves with the knowledge that 1) we are better than this jAmEs[PK] in so many ways and 2) he’ll never amount to anything more than the trash that comes out of his mouth.

That’s free MMOs for you. While this crap still happens in paid MMOs like WoW due to the sheer number of subscribers (10M), I think its prevalence in other paid MMOs aren’t as significant.
At least, that’s how LOTRO and City of Heroes treated me.

With respect to Mike, I think it’s just that there IS a subset of gamers who use the virtual worlds to “act out” and essentially cause lots of mayhem - all for the fun of it.
That subset becomes more and more apparent when you’re playing MMOs in the Philippines. Too many garbage-minded kids and people log on to the servers, and it doesn’t seem to matter if the game is P2P or F2P. Ragnarok Online here had more than its share of griefers even during the all-P2P days.

I hate to judge, but I observed that these kids who like to grief usually fall into a certain social class. I’ve had too many run-ins with such hooligans, whether online and/or real life.
You see, these urchins gravitate towards free MMOs because such games are accessible to them thanks to the numerous net cafes and game rooms. They can’t be part of P2P MMOs for obvious reasons (i.e. moolah).
It doesn’t mean that if a game is P2P, there would be no retards there. Granted, there will always be retarded MMO players anywhere, but I think they are made more apparent in free MMOs because of their accessibility to more people. It’s a numbers game.
