Ragnarok Online: My temporary home

by Joel on June 22nd, 2008

Yes, the wife and I have decided to call Ragnarok Online Philippines our temporary virtual home until the Guardians of Perfect World Philippines’ Tiger Server rethinks its policies or hell freezes over. Oh, you missed my tirade about the spat between me and another clan officer? Don’t worry … I took it all the gory details down on electronic paper.

Frankly, the wife and I are enjoying the time off, away from the weekly grind of territorial wars and non-stop trading of barbs. Yes, Ragnarok Online feels like the right choice, considering we spent our first days in MMORPGdom in Rune Midgard, Ragnarok Online’s mythical world.

It’s so weird playing newbies again. What used to be a very familiar place now seems very alien. It’s understandable, though, because the last time we played Ragnarok Online, as a couple, was, hmmm, almost two years ago, and that was on the PK server, and before that Fenrir. Now, we’re playing on the Valkyrie Server, Ragnarok Online Philippines’ first free-to-play server (the second being Valhalla).

I chose to play the character I started six months ago, the one I created for an article I wrote for a local online gaming magazine. I named her Tika`Waylan, in honor of the first character my wife made in Ragnarok Online, back when Chaos was the only server. The only difference is my version of Tika is a swordie; the original is a merchant/blacksmith. Tika, for those who don’t know, is a character from the critically acclaimed Dragonlance novels written by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman for then TSR books.

A few hours after my “first” foray in Rune Midgard, the wife created her first character in Valkyrie. She named her, well, TikaWaylan (again). So Valkyrie is now host to two characters named Tika. Sheesh. I hope other players won’t think we’re bots.

Speaking of bots, they’re still a dime a dozen in Ragnarok Online, especially on Valkyrie, which is free to play. Fortunately, controls are in place to limit their activities. Among these “controls” is the removal of some rare item drops from both common and boss monsters.

Since Valkyrie is free, the powers that be at Level Up! Games, the local publisher of the game, have deemed it necessary to move these rare loots to the item mall, dubbed “Armory of the Gods” in this version of the game world.

Well, that’s enough for now. Tika the Swordie is nearing Level 41 and I want to give her more attention. I’ll need to tank Joyce’s character, who is still in her 20s, in the coming days, and I want to see both Tikas turn into their second jobs within a week. Let’s see if the ol’ magic is still in our hands.

Special thanks to Mon Macutay, a.k.a. GM Tristan, for putting up this video on YouTube.
