Perfect World update takes 11 hours!

The other day, I wrote about my frustration over not being able to play Rising Force Online because of a faulty client. Yesterday, I spent the entire day offline. The day off would have been great if it had been an active choice. But, no, I was forced to stay offline because I had to download the latest patch for Perfect World.

It took a whole day to download the patch? Not exactly. I started patching around 2 p.m. The Perfect World patcher finished at 1 a.m. Yes, the patching process sucked, big time. Level Up! Games, Philippine publisher of the hit China-made online game, said the patch would only take an hour with a DSL connection. So when my Perfect World patcher reached the middle of the progress bar and stayed there for almost two hours, I had to ring up Jake San Diego, a friend working for the giant Philippine MMO publisher.

Jake was adamant that the patch should take only an hour to download. He assured me that there was nothing wrong at their end and suggested that maybe the problem had something to do with my ISP’s interconnection with other networks. Damn you, Bay … uhmm, never mind.

Fortunately, the problem resolved itself just after midnight. But the time spent waiting sapped me not only of excitement for the new features the Frost City patch brings but also my already waning interest in the game. Couple these with my recent departure from the clan I’ve helped nurture from the beginning, then the recipe for semi-retirement is almost complete.
