Perfect World inks deal with IP E-Games
If you’re living in the Philippines, you might find the title of this post a little disturbing. Perfect World in the hands of IP E-Games? What happened to its supposed publisher Level Up! Games? Actually, the deal is not about the online game Perfect World but the company that produced the hit title.
Let me clear it up, courtesy of this press statement from Perfect World Co. Ltd.:
Perfect World Co. Ltd., a leading online game developer and operator in China, has announced that it has entered into a new licensing agreement with IP E-Game Ventures Inc., a well-known online operator in the Philippines. IP E-Game Ventures Inc. will license Perfect World’s Zhu Xian game in the Philippines.
Zhu Xian is based on a popular Internet fantasy novel with the same name. The game has been well-received among domestic online game players since its launch in May 2007. On May 28, 2008, Perfect World launched Samsara in the Six Realms expansion pack and propelled a new round of enthusiasm for the game. The new expansion pack introduced new features to the game, including a brand new “Ghost” school and the Pet System. These latest features will be included in the English version that will be licensed to the Philippines.
“Zhu Xian is a popular online game in China and we are very pleased to enter an agreement with Perfect World to license it in the Philippines. Given Perfect World’s extensive international experience and our operating capabilities in the Philippines, we believe gamers in the country will greatly enjoy Zhu Xian,” said Steve Tsao, president and chief operating officer of IP E-Game Ventures Inc.
“We are happy to add the Philippines to the list of countries to which Zhu Xian has been licensed. Successful overseas licensing is an indicator of our rapid growth in international expansion and we believe our continued success in exporting our portfolio of games to markets outside of China demonstrates quality and adaptability of our games. I believe we will see impressive results from Zhu Xian through our join efforts with IP E-Game Ventures Inc.,” added Michael Chi, chairman and chief executive officer of Perfect World.
Wow! My wish is coming true. Zhu Xian is finally coming to the Philippines. I just hope IP E-Games will get its act together and give this game the attention that it deserves. Check this out and tell me it’s not worthy of praise:

thing is with e-games, their free-to-play scheme wittily functions in such a way that players are “tempted” to spend and spend more to do more actions in-game.. vending, hourly xp mods, wider character customization at hourly-based maintenance (u have to keep buying the darn costume every after X number of days to maintain your look).. all covered by optional top-ups. they did that with ran, and did it again in cabal. i wouldn’t be surprised if the same happened to ZX.
yeah, i guess that’s the way to make money in the mmorpg business.T_T

I think it’s a win-win formula, that is, if you’re not overly concerned over increasing the number of players. I mean, yes, you’ll get some of the first players hooked, but what about new prospects?

well, ran was a hit. but i personally think it was more because of its addictive skills system than its top-up scheme (the latter IMHO was the downside to the game). lots of long-time ran players are less inclined to shift to other games as they have already invested so much.
pretty clever, and it would be great if i were among the higher-ups at e-games. but as a player, its like hellish monthly punishment for my wallet. though i have bleak hopes that zhu xian would be an exception, i still hope IPEG and PF would come up with a different formula for ZX.
