Dragon Nest: One more trailer to whet your appetite

I’ve found another version of the trailer for EYEDENTITY Games’ Dragon Nest, a new massively multiplayer online role-playing game that is slated for beta testing within the year. Feast your eyes on this:

Like I said in a previous post, I think Dragon Nest will dominate the MMORPG market next year with its stunning graphics and fast game play. I only have one question for the developers: Will the player avatars always appear on the left side of the screen?

Requiem Bloodymare: Having fun with my Kruxena rogue

Despite the painfully slow leveling process, I’m having a ball playing my Kruxena rogue in my recently adopted online game of choice Requiem Bloodymare. Oh, no, the slow leveling I’m talking about is no fault of Gravity, developer of the game, but my own. I’m so lazy when it comes to leveling in a new game because I like taking it slow, to get a better grip of the game’s features.

For example, I’ve learned that the Kruxena’s strength lies in both their prowess with short and long range weapons and magic. They are, however, very brutal, lacking the compassion for others present in Requiem’s two other playable races, the Turan and the Bartuk.

I have also come to love claws as the weapon of choice for my Kruxena rogue, one of two first jobs for the race, the other being the Soul Hunter, which specializes in magic instead of physical weapons.

Here are the latest screenshots of my Kruxena rogue in action:

Well, that’s it for Requiem Bloodymare for now. Stay tuned to MMOtaku for more Requiem Bloodymare gore.

Dragon Nest: The King of MMORPGs

I know I’m taking a big risk by making such a sweeping statement based on a trailer, but if EYEDENTITY Games can pull off what they’re showing in Dragon Nest previews in the actual game, then they’ve got it made.

Again, based on the trailer, Dragon Nest combines two of the most important elements of an MMORPG in today’s world: fast-paced action and stunning graphics. I better just shut up and let you watch the trailer that inspired my statement:

Now tell me that Dragon Nest isn’t set to take the throne. It really isn’t a surprise why Dragon Nest looks so good. Take a gander at this news item about the unveiling of the game:

EYEDENTITY Games, a Korean development studio comprised of game developers from NCSoft, Gravity, Phantogram and Webzen, has released the first North American look at the upcoming fantasy action multiplayer online role-playing game Dragon Nest.

EYEDENTITY Games will bring Dragon Nest to markets in Asia, including Korea, China, Taiwan and Japan, and North America. EYEDENTITY Games’ Dragon Nest will enter beta testing in Korea in late 2008, and will roll out the service to other markets beginning in 2009.

Yes, the big guns of Asian MMORPGs have banded together to bring you Dragon Nest, so expect a lot of great things within the year. Stay tuned to MMOtaku for more Dragon Nest news in days to come.

ZzangOnline prepares for open beta

Good news for fans of massively multiplayer online fighting games. MuhanGame has just announced the prepping of ZzangOnline for open beta testing later this year.

Haven’t heard of it? So have I, but I’ve seen a video of it, and it looks great. Before we jump right on ahead to watch the video, let’s review what ZzangOnline is all about.

Here’s an excerpt from an interview of Kyungseop Shim, team leader for overseas marketing of MuhanGame, conducted by MCV UK:

ZzangOnline is a horizontal scroll casual MMORPG. It’s an easy to play game. There are other similar games, i.e. Dungeon & Fighter, Quest Play, Get Amped, and Gem Fighter.

Unlike other existing casual games, ZzangOnline has 3D characters, instead of cartoon renderings. It has dynamic actions and a slow motion feature for battling enemies. The Battle Zone is a PVP mode. Up to four are allowed to participate to clear quests.

Speaking of Battle Zone, there are Sun and Judgment opposing to each other also in the game. Gamers are to occupy the Battle Zone through battles in the system.

Hmmm, kinda confusing. Haha. Let’s take a look at the video instead:

Rumor or not: World of Warcraft player sues The9

World of Warcraft inspirational poster

I’m not sure whether it’s a rumor or not. I found it on one website, one that focuses on China-based MMORPGs, but not on other sites that specialize in MMORPG-related news.

Here are the details of the case as explained in an article on 17173.com:

The case, filed by a player questioning the banning of his account on March 7 by The9 due to suspicion of bug exploitation, was heard on July 4, 2008.

The9 claimed it had published notices on its World of Warcraft official website on two occasions, February 21 and 29, to warn players against exploiting bugs in the game.

The9 said some players continued exploiting bugs in the game and earning from these despite the warning.

In the complaint against The9, the player said his continued exploitation of bugs in World of Warcraft was not his fault because The9 failed to shut down maps with bugs, and didn’t even try to fix the bugs.

At the end of the hearing, the two parties still didn’t see eye to eye, prompting the court to hear the case on another day.

So who do you think is in the right? My money’s on The9.

Photo Essay: Ragnarok Online

Actually, it’s more of a screenshot essay.

Anyway, like I said in an earlier post, I’m playing Ragnarok Online again, and enjoying every minute of it. It’s soooo hard to start over. But I have, in the past, hopped servers several times that I should already be used to it. When Ragnarok Online was introduced in the Philippines by Level Up! Games back in 2003, everybody had been stuck with only one server—Chaos. About a year later, a couple of new servers were opened, and it was on one of these—Fenrir—that we, my wife and I, resettled with some friends, including the eccentric Henry Sy (named after a local tycoon).

A few months later, we got turned off from playing Ragnarok Online by a week-long server problem. So we decided to quit, but not permanently. We still visited Fenrir from time to time, checking on friends and our stash of loots. All things, however, come to an end, and that was what happened. We quit Ragnarok Online until a new server, Urdr (otherwise known as the PK server), opened in 2006. We were drawn back to Rune Midgard, lured by new adventures with new friends. Our time there, however, was short-lived. We had to quit—again—due to personal problems.

Now, we find ourselves back in Rune Midgard, this time in Valkyrie, and we’re hoping to make it permanent. Ragnarok Online still holds a lot of potential for an old MMORPG, thanks to the constant updates from Gravity, its developer. In our first few days on Valkyrie, we have learned that a few things haven’t changed:

rovalkyrie0

rovalkyrie1

rovalkyrie2

Rockers are still a good source of experience points and loot for characters who have just changed jobs. This is especially true for vitality-based characters like swordies and merchants. Watch out, though, as one map where Rockers romp, Prontera Field 7, is also where the miniboss Vocal rocks too-daring avatars. No, I don’t have screenshots of my character near the noisy miniboss. Why? Because, at the time, she was too young to die … foolishly.

rovalkyrie5

rovalkyrie6

Higher level characters, or those who have already gone beyond the normal, aura-less ken, don’t care much about loots. Some of these uber powerful characters are still seen slaying monsters in newbie fields. Take advantage of this by following them around and grabbing their loot. This is highly recommended for those who are just starting out. Remember, though, that if the highbie resents your looting spree, just apologize and return whatever loot you took.

Crazy Kart: Champion at last

When I visited friends up at Level Up! Games, Philippine publisher of hit MMORPGs like Ragnarok Online, Perfect World, and RF Online, I received a tip from GM Tristan (mild-mannered Mon Macutay) that if you really want to take top spot in Crazy Kart, the company’s newest baby, you should learn to be patient.

What Mon meant by that was I should stay in second place throughout the race until I found the perfect opportunity to zap the first placer with a lightning bolt (or blow his or her cart to smithereens with a rocket) and leave the sucker sniffing my vapor trail.

Well, after a dozen or so round on the racetrack, I finally did it. Hooray!

Going gaga over Crazy Kart

Yeah, call me a sucker for casual racing games. I can’t, for the life of me, explain why Crazy Kart, a new massively multiplayer online racing game from Level Up! Games, appeals to my gamer genes. Hey, don’t get me wrong. I love racing games. The Need For Speed series always tops my list of favorite PC games. But a cutesy-patootsey online racing game?

Methinks I should investigate this phenomenon better by playing more Crazy Kart. Meantime, while I log in to the game to take myriad snapshots, content yourself with this video posted on YouTube by the game’s Philippine publisher.

Perfect World inks deal with IP E-Games

If you’re living in the Philippines, you might find the title of this post a little disturbing. Perfect World in the hands of IP E-Games? What happened to its supposed publisher Level Up! Games? Actually, the deal is not about the online game Perfect World but the company that produced the hit title.

Let me clear it up, courtesy of this press statement from Perfect World Co. Ltd.:

Perfect World Co. Ltd., a leading online game developer and operator in China, has announced that it has entered into a new licensing agreement with IP E-Game Ventures Inc., a well-known online operator in the Philippines. IP E-Game Ventures Inc. will license Perfect World’s Zhu Xian game in the Philippines.

Zhu Xian is based on a popular Internet fantasy novel with the same name. The game has been well-received among domestic online game players since its launch in May 2007. On May 28, 2008, Perfect World launched Samsara in the Six Realms expansion pack and propelled a new round of enthusiasm for the game. The new expansion pack introduced new features to the game, including a brand new “Ghost” school and the Pet System. These latest features will be included in the English version that will be licensed to the Philippines.

Zhu Xian is a popular online game in China and we are very pleased to enter an agreement with Perfect World to license it in the Philippines. Given Perfect World’s extensive international experience and our operating capabilities in the Philippines, we believe gamers in the country will greatly enjoy Zhu Xian,” said Steve Tsao, president and chief operating officer of IP E-Game Ventures Inc.

“We are happy to add the Philippines to the list of countries to which Zhu Xian has been licensed. Successful overseas licensing is an indicator of our rapid growth in international expansion and we believe our continued success in exporting our portfolio of games to markets outside of China demonstrates quality and adaptability of our games. I believe we will see impressive results from Zhu Xian through our join efforts with IP E-Game Ventures Inc.,” added Michael Chi, chairman and chief executive officer of Perfect World.

Wow! My wish is coming true. Zhu Xian is finally coming to the Philippines. I just hope IP E-Games will get its act together and give this game the attention that it deserves. Check this out and tell me it’s not worthy of praise:

Requiem: Bloodymare … mouth-watering graphics

It’s about the only thing I can say about it now. I just logged into the game a few hours ago and haven’t had the time to go beyond Level 4, not to mention the newbie leveling area.

So here are some screenshots to whet your appetite for blood.

Oh, and in case your wondering why I didn’t post high resolution screenshots … it’s just too bloody. Some kid might find the screenshots and run to daddy and mommy to complain about them. Well, time to go back to exploring, maiming, and pillaging.
